به طور کلی، دو نوع دیابت وجود دارد، دیابت نوع 1 و 2. شیوع دیابت نوع 1 کمتر از دیابت نوع 2 است و قبل از سن 40 سالگی اتفاق می افتد.

دیابت نوع 1 با کمبود انسولین همراه است و بدون انسولین کافی فرد قادر نخواهد بود میزان نرمال از گلوکز خون را حفظ کند. این مسئله باعث بالا رفتن قند خون می شود که موقعیتی بسیار خطرناک است.

دیابت نوه 2 شیوع بیشتری دارد و دیرتر اتفاق می افتد، معمولاً زمانیکه فرد اضافه وزن زیادی داشته باشد و وضعیت غذایی و فیزیکی او نیز جالب نباشد. در دیابت نوع 2، مشکل مقاومت دربرابر انسولین است نه کمبود انسولین. البته نتیجه آن یکسان است و این مورد نیز باعث بالا رفتن قند خون می شود.

رژیم غذایی و توصیه هایی که در زیر ارائه می شود صرفاً برای بیماران مبتلا به دیابت نوع 2 داده شده است. 4 قانون کلی وجود دارد:
